International Certification as an English Language Teacher

The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages ("Trinity Cert") is one of the most highly-regarded English Language Teaching qualifications in the world. Become the English teacher of your dreams with the Trinity Cert.

Gaining an international English Language Teaching qualification has benefits both in and out of Chile.

  • It shows a minimum quantifiable and defined standard of knowledge, skills and experience
  • It is awarded by a reputable external body with training and certification based on research into what works
  • It shows a recognition of the benefits of professionalising the industry
  • It shows your seriousness and commitment becuase you have dedicated time and effort to gain the certificate
  • It provides a useful filter to reduce the risks of a bad hire for the employer

Most "TEFL Certificates" are not recognised and not valid, and many if not most are a waste of your time and money. The two biggest and best certifications are CELTA from Cambridge and the Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Trinity Cert) from Trinity College, London, the home of the LTCL, Trinity Music, Drama and Speech qualifications and the Trinity GESE English examinations taken in many Chilean schools and throughout South America.

Both are recognised by the UK government (Ofqual) at Level 5 (mid-level BA), the British Council, Equals, IALC inter alia. The only reason that its competitor is better known in Chile is because of five years' of branding and marketing efforts, not because it is better. In fact, worldwide many of the competitor's tutors have the Trinity Diploma rather than its own Diploma, including here in Chile.

The Wimbledon School of English (WSE), one of the UK's leading English schools (ranked #1 in 2020/21 and for most of the last 20 years) offers the Trinity Cert part-time online. The course is well-established, the tutors have considerable experience and they did not stop running their teacher training courses in 2020. WSE is also planning a modular version where you can choose the components you want (oral, assessment, coursebooks, correction) if you are not yet ready for the full course, and they are willing to offer a part-time online version during "Chilean hours" if there is enough interest.

WSE fees are a little under GBP 1000, and with a 10% discount for using code "YCC" approximately CLP 850.000. With the CLP going up and the GBP down, tomorrow it my be even cheaper! Compare this to the local provider's CLP1.500.000!

If you can do face-to-face, and/or have $$$, the local option is makes sense. If you need or prefer online and/or do not have $$$, WSE is your better choice. Please leave your comments and queries below, or contact us**Online modular programme now available**
