Condensing

Condensing is reducing the length of an utterance without losing meaning; it is not paraphrasing or summarising. This session review four main types of condensing language, examples and approaches, for Advanced English users and teachers.

In this session, we review

  • reduction
  • anaphoric and cataphoric reference
  • substitution and ellipsis
  • encompassing editing, rewriting
  • implications for the classroom
  • problem clinic

This session is an overview. Remember, developing competencies in writing, in this case in precision and succinctness, requires practice and feedback so get that pencil sharpened!
