Advanced - Vocabulary : Counting Uncountables

A useful simplification and generalisation for Beginner to Lower Intermediate level students is that uncountable nouns cannot be counted. Sadly, this is not absolute; they are not exceptions to the rule. Many, if not most, "uncountables" can in fact be counted. Waters, fishes and two lagers all exist, and many "uncountable" plurals are actually quite common. Advanced learners should know this, which and when and why.

Do you know when and why "uncountables" can be counted?

Every Advanced user or learner who has taken this session has said, "I did not know that" and/or "I did not learn that at university".

During the one-hour online session, we review the six general patterns behind "uncountable" plurals, and specific and challenging usages. We also discuss instances with which participants have difficulties and, depending on time, other topics which may arise.

This advanced Vocabulary session focusses on accuracy, appropriacy and on developing the speaker's range, while considering :

  • Usages, idiomatic and figurative
  • Related structures and vocabulary
  • Uses and misuses
