Advanced Grammar : gerunds and infinitives

Infinitives in related languages such as Spanish can be expressed in three different ways in English, each with a different sense. This one-hour single-topic session reviews infinitives with and without "to" and infinitives v gerunds, corrects mis-learned or mis-applied "rules" and reviews the patterns behind most gerund uses.

To date, no-one has acheived 100% in this challenge; how well do you know gerund-use and will you be the first to get them all right?

During these one-hour online sessions, we review general patterns behind gerund and infinitive usages, specifically semantic, and specific and challenging usages. We discuss instances with which participants have difficulties and, depending on time, other topics which may arise.

Also available :

  • Advanced Gerunds and Infinitives Practice & Feedback II - for those who really know their stuff. Session I is strongly recommended first, as is a score of 75% or higher.
  • Advanced Gerunds and Infinitives Practice & Feedback III - restricted to those who get at least 75% correct in Session II.

This advanced Use of English session focusses on accuracy, appropriacy and on developing the speaker's range, while considering :

  • Usages, idiomatic and figurative
  • Related structures and vocabulary
  • Uses and misuses
