Assessing Writing

Writing is the least natural of all language skills and requires guidance and practice, and it is that combination which places demands on teachers. The only way to develop as a writer is through producing written texts and receiving feedback, and providing that feedback takes time.

Feedback means reviewing a student's production, making judgements and assessments, and meeting with the student. Writing within an educational context often requires grading, which is something else again.

This one-hour Philosophy and Practice seminar takes an overview of writing assessment and offers some valid and reliable, quick-and-easy, teacher-friendly approaches.
