Educational governance relates to big-picture, strategic and philosophical considerations when overseeing a school, a programme or teaching, learning and evaluation. It is the "why?" and "why not?", rather than the what, when and how.
Each session in this series of Professional Conversations considers a single-topic which raises matters related to educational governance. Prior to each session, we send participants a text or two for pre-reading and to "prime the pump", and during the session we explore the issues and their implications so as better to make decisions or to understand decisions which have been taken.
Previous sessions have included :
- Do teachers have free speech?
- What should a school do? Problematic issues and student behaviour.
- Grading, standards and grade inflation; when is a 7 a 7?
- Teacher quality and performance; do "bad" teachers exist?
- Does teacher appearance matter?
- Bullying - when, what and who.
- Gifted education, what is it and who deserves it?
- Hot-button issues; is it controversial or appropriate?
- Teachers and bias
- Student placement : promotion, retention and acceleration
- Educating boys; are they the same?
- Is school "choice" a human right?
- Is education a public or private good?
- Teacher pay and fairness
- Are private schools wealthy?
- Is for-profit education bad?
These are one-hour online video-conferencing sessions; an in-person, face-to-face option is also available. A C1 or higher level of English is assumed.
